She was known only as Marie. Her story has perplexed art historians for the decades since American Impressionist painters flocked to the French village of Giverny, as they followed the path of its famous artist-in-residence Claude Monet. Marie was the favorite model of one of those painters, Theodore Robinson, whose untimely death at the age of 43 eclipsed his legacy as one of the greatest American painters of his day. This is the tale – part true, part imagined – of Theodore and Marie, set in Giverny, where author Rebecca Bricker captures the life and spirit of a thriving artists' colony at the turn of the last century. In The Secret of Marie, Monet's Giverny is the backdrop for a modern-day love story between a French architect and an American writer who meet at an ancient moulin in the village. Their romance conjures up the secret of an artist from Vermont and his Parisian model who left an indelible mark, tinged with mystery, on the history of American Impressionism.

The Secret of Marie Rebecca Bricker 9781518839320 Books Reviews
I just finished The Secret of Marie. What a great read!
When I put it down, I couldn't wait to get back to it.
The story was so finely woven with the history. I went on Google and devoured every Theodore Robinson painting I could lay my hands on.
His life was far too short, but boy did he fill it. Giverny sounds divine, and the Hotel Baudy as well.
I also really enjoyed the Author's Epilogue. And the bio of Theo and the photos were the icing on the cake.
You took us away, and I was slightly sad to come back to real life when I finished your book.
I spent the afternoon reading The Secret of Marie, savoring it from start to finish. I love the author's capacity to be delicately descriptive in a way that eases the reader into her world. The writing is luscious and sensual. Her reserach about the artists in Giverny was informative, and supplemented the story nicely.I love the character, Gerard - a unique blend of strength and tenderness, as well as her sweet, secure, and loving depiction of Alex, whose wisdom and compassion are admirable.
I thank the author for writing The Secret of Marie. It is a wonderful story. It has a sense of mystery, yet is a love story at its core, not only between Kate and Gerard, but also between Theodore and Marie. She created beautifully rendered people, and it was a gift that she shared them with us.
Having enjoyed Rebecca Bricker's earlier books Tales from Tavanti and Not a True Story, I eagerly anticipated her new novella The Secret of Marie. I was not disappointed. I relish books set in places I have visited and this book is largely set in Giverny, France which I visited on a day trip from Paris in 2014. Rebecca paints a magical picture in words of this charming village and its history. it is the village where Monet spent important years of his live and painted many of his best known works. It is a captivating romance but more than that. It has many layers - the unfolding of a mystery, a well-researched insight into the artistic history of Giverny and the many artists who worked and played there, a journey into the world of cellular memory, the value of good friends but most of all it is a good escapist read. I wanted to pack my bags and return to Giverny to ponder its past. And I desperately want to see A Marauder - the painting that figures prominently in the story. Where could it be?
I now await the film of The Secret of Marie!
Do you remember that commercial that ended with a woman in a fabulous bathtub sighing . . . "Calgon, take me away." The Secret of Marie, by Rebecca Bricker, is that kind of luscious experience. From the buttery croissants to the otherworldly gardens of Monet in Giverny to the streets of Paris and the arms of the equally delicious (. . . oh, wait, I don't want to spoil anything for you), let Kate (our heroine) take you away. Rebecca's descriptions of Giverny, which provides the background for most of the tale, will have you longing to book a week at the moulin. Her characters are people you want to take to dinner or at least share a bottle of wine with. This multi-layered love story follows the lives of lovers in two different eras The mysterious Marie and the American painter who made her famous, and the forty-year-old Kate who uncovers Marie's story and finds a proper ending to her own. But at Shakespeare well knew, “The course of true love never did run smooth.” Based on a true story, it's a lovely, lively, funny, sad, just-about-perfect read.
It was a great read. Loved the history, the photos and the romance. Have shared it with my friends.
I highly recommend this book. It's a very nicely constructed piece of historical fiction revolving around the impressionist movement, particularly the American component of it, in Giverny, France, where Monet lived and worked. There is a captivating, imaginative, and romantic modern layer of fiction overlaid on the factual historical background of the book. Well researched and thoughtful. Loved it!
The cover proclaims this a mystery, and I will not debate that; it does have quality of a mystery. However, I would classify it more and a romantic narrative and spiritual pilgrimage - a treasure hunt which reveals much about the lives of the characters and the historical roots of Impressionism and the life of Theodore Robinson.
Rebecca has an easy style which invites you into her story, and in time pulls you in igniting your curiosity and passions. This is truly an entertaining, dramatic, and engaging story of love, life, choices, and search (and also art) ... and it is just plain fun.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who has looked at a piece of art and allowed it to tell their story. You will be captivated and moved.
